Coronation Celebrations

Posted on 5 May 20235 May 2023 by joannegenealogy

The 6th May is approaching, and the bunting is up!

The Coronation of King Charles III will be another unique moment in our history, and however you are celebrating with friends or family, it will be watched on TV by millions across the world.

Past Coronations

The last Coronation was of our late Queen Elizabeth II on 2nd June 1953, and the first to be televised. Some may still have memories of her Coronation, with the Golden State Coach taking centre stage in the procession, and will be a key feature in the Coronation of King Charles III. Thousands lined the streets in London, and may held local entertainment and street parties for children.

The Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth was held on 12 May 1937. Queen Elizabeth on the death of King George VI became affectionally known as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

Edward VIII, the eldest brother of King George VI, gained the title King on the death of their father and was King for 11 months, resigning his position and therefore did not have a coronation.

King George VI had taken the Throne following the abdication of his brother, Edward.

Royal Regalia

Throughout past Coronations, the Royal Regalia was a key feature and has symbolic messages and roles to play throughout the ceremony.

Some of these items include the King’s Orb, a round golden globe featuring a cross symbolising Christianity. The sceptre, is one of two used in the Coronation, this one being a long golden rod with precious stones and cross to represent power and justice.

The Ampulla and the Coronation Spoon, both made of gold and created in the 16th and 12th centuries respectively, are used in the anointing of the King. This part of the Coronation is hidden from the camera’s as it is thought to be a sacred part of the ceremony and a deeply personal one for those taking part.

This weekend’s events will be a key part in Royal history with King Charles III and wife Camilla being named Queen.

Coronation Food

Coronation Chicken became popular and created especially for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. This year, for the Coronation of King Charles III, Coronation Quiche has been suggested. Victoria Sponge Cake was created to honour Queen Victoria.

Will Coronation Chicken, Coronation Quiche and Victoria Sponge Cakes be served during the many street and family parties this weekend?
