It has been a busy time of late, with deadlines all met and end of year project submission. Now all completed, I can review what I’ve learnt and achieved over the past 12 months:
Completed year 2 diploma year of MSc in Genealogical, Palaeographical and Heraldic Studies with the University of Strathclyde, where we covered:
- archive administration and procedures
- literature searching
- research plans
- ethics within genealogy
- Irish records
- genetic genealogy & DNA
- US & Canada sources
- record sets for British Empire research
- Australia and New Zealand records and research tools
- family history searches in Europe
- Jewish sources
- heraldic studies
- house and building research
- Scottish records
- migration studies
Alongside these topics, I also carried out research for a number of clients including a community project on the lost Vicars of Alstonefield, Staffordshire.
My end project included local studies on the market town of Uttoxeter covering occupations in the 19th century with an integrated case study on the key residents who were in the brewery trade.
I have attended numerous talks on Quakerism, Temperance and Victorian life in Britain. My first visit to the White Ribbon Association archives gave me much to contemplate and scope for next year’s dissertation.
Following a short break over the summer, I am looking forward to updating my CPD, working on current projects and starting my final year of study in October.
I continue to contribute to my wider genealogy network including RQG (Register of Qualified Genealogists) and local archives and museum.
